Aged Care training has been specifically identified as an area for development through this funding and has been allocated $25 million towards skill development. A further $23 million has been allocated across all sectors and industries.

The newly announced funding through the National Workforce Development Fund (NWDF) is a four-year funding scheme, through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), to help enterprises identify their workforce development needs and apply for funding of qualifications and skill sets that can address those needs.

The NWDF offers the aged care sector an opportunity to train existing and new workers in formal qualifications. It also provides flexibility so organisations can identify support services such as mentoring to enhance learning programs and delivery of formal training. As a broker, CS&HISC is working with the Aged Care sector to identify elements of good practice in workforce development and training delivery so organisations have a clear understanding of what to look for when partnering with a registered training organisation. It is important that the training delivered is of the highest quality.

The NWDF also opens the way for employers to address current and future business needs by considering a range of qualifications and skill sets in addition to specific aged care qualifications. For example organisations in the aged care sector may apply for training places in management development, training and assessment, allied health and other health services to support their work in aged care. The focus of this funding is on strengthening the development of the workforce and workplaces, and to this end the parameters for funding have embedded flexibility.

Employment Services Providers are also eligible to apply for funds through the NWDF in order to assist organisations in recruiting new entrants into their workforce. This was not the case under the Enterprise Based Productivity Places Program (EBPPP) also funded by DEEWR. Almost 1,000 places were funded within the community services and health industries through EBPPP when it launched last year and we will continue to support these recipients and this program until its completion in February 2014.

The Department of Health and Ageing (DOHA) has also provided significant funding to support skills development through vocational qualifications in recent years and CS&HISC is working with program managers in DOHA to ensure the NWDF complements this investment.

People can visit the CS&HISC website for more information.

Applications are due to CSHISC by 16 September to meet DEEWR formal closing date of 30 September

At the end of last year the AIFL, in partnership with Upper Murray Health and Community Services and Central Gippsland Health were successful in a submission to document the experiences of our traineeship project. This e-learning project examines an online, on-the-job traineeship model in place at two rural and regional health care facilities. The AIFL is a strong advocate for the role of trainees in rural Australia in addressing a growing skills shortage and encouraging local employment and training. Through the delivery of the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance and Certificate III in Aged Care, regional facilities are able to redesign their workforce to address shortages in both allied health professionals and aged care workers.

The AIFL hopes that by raising the awareness of flexible learning models such as this students will be able to study and work where they live, reinforcing our motto live and learn. A full report on the model will be available by the end of June; any parties interested in this model are welcome to contact our office to discuss. Any employers and employees that want to participate in a traineeship are encouraged to contact us also.

The Australian Institute of Flexible Learning (AIFL), from Corryong is very proud to announce that they have made it to the finals of the Albury Wodonga Chamber of Commerce Business Awards – in not just one category but two. This is a stellar achievement for the AIFL, as the awards are open to all local business in the greater Albury Wodonga area. For a new, small business such as the AIFL, part of the Upper Murray Health & Community Services, to gain recognition for business excellence and technological innovation is truly a great achievement.

The primary purpose of the Chamber Business Awards is to provide local businesses the opportunity to celebrate and be recognised for their achievements – and the AIFL takes great pride in being able to say they have made it to the finals and Maxine Brockfield, Chief Executive and DON of Upper Murray Health & Community Services says “We all should be very proud of this great resource we have here in Corryong”.

The categories the AIFL has achieved finalist status in are the “Best New Business” category, and the “Excellence in Business Technology and Innovation”. “Best New Business” is awarded to a business or organization which has been in operation more than twelve months but less than three years and shows excellence in research, innovation, development and overall solid business practices – and the judging panel has agreed, the AIFL checks all those boxes, in particular, the judges were most impressed with the AIFL’s strategic business plan and good business structure. The website (www.aifl.edu.au) also came in for special comment as it was considered to be very user friendly and easy to navigate. The “Excellence in Business Technology and Innovation” recognizes a business which demonstrates their commitment and achievements towards improved business technology and innovation – and again, the AIFL admirably demonstrates that, having created an innovative and new method of delivering distance education.

The winners of the Chamber of Commerce Awards will be announced at a Gala event on the 15th October and the AIFL hopes that they will be able to join the other winners on stage to accept their award.

The AIFL is also a nominee in the People’s Choice award. This will be awarded to the business receiving the most public votes via an SMS voting system. For your chance to win 2 nights accommodation for two, plus breakfast daily and a 3 course dinner for two at Quay West Resort and Spa, Falls Creek simply SMS your name and the AIFL’s name to 197 197 00.

Yesterday morning the AIFL hosted a business breakfast at Rileys Restaurant in Corryong. We had a good turn up of local business and service providers and I think all would agree that it was an interesting meeting. One of the most productive outcomes of the breakfast was the identification of training needs within the community. Among the needs recognised was training in Customer Service and Agriculture and the AIFL will now look at providing the relevant qualifications. A big thanks to all who attended.
